Illinois allows Grace Period and Election Day registration at designated locations. Early voting runs for 40 days, and no-excuse mail voting is available to all registered voters.

28 days before Election Day (online/mail). Grace Period and Election Day registration available in person.
Early voting
Early voting begins 40 days before Election Day at the local election authority and expands to additional sites 15 days before.
Absentee / mail-in
Request by 5 days before Election Day (online); ballot postmarked by Election Day and received within 14 days.
ID requirements
Generally no ID required for voters already registered. First-time voters who registered by mail may need to show ID.
Election Day hours
Polls open 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM local time. If you are in line at 7:00 PM, you can vote.

  • Grace Period registration runs from 27 days before through Election Day at the election authority.
  • Election Day registration is available at every polling place — bring two forms of ID, one with current address.
  • Permanent vote-by-mail status is available — once enrolled, you'll automatically receive a ballot for every election.
