Voting Guide.

Ohio requires photo ID at the polls and registration 30 days before Election Day. Early voting runs for nearly four weeks at county Boards of Elections.

30 days before Election Day.
Early voting
In-person early voting begins approximately 4 weeks before Election Day at the county Board of Elections.
Absentee / mail-in
Request must be received by 7 days before Election Day. Ballot must be postmarked by the day before Election Day and received within 4 days after.
ID requirements
Photo ID required (Ohio DL/ID, US passport, US passport card, military ID, interim ID issued by Ohio BMV). Non-photo IDs no longer accepted as of 2023.
Election Day hours
Polls open 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM Eastern Time. If you are in line at 7:30 PM, you can vote.

Extra info:

  • Ohio tightened ID requirements in 2023 — only certain photo IDs are now accepted.
  • If you don't have a photo ID, you can get a free state ID at the Ohio BMV.
  • Mail ballots must be postmarked by the day BEFORE Election Day (not Election Day itself) to count.
