Texas requires registration 30 days before Election Day and photo ID at the polls. Early voting runs for nearly two weeks. Mail voting requires a qualifying excuse.

30 days before Election Day.
Early voting
Early voting begins 17 days before Election Day and ends 4 days before. All counties offer at least one weekend day.
Absentee / mail-in
Mail ballot application must be received by 11 days before Election Day. Ballot must be received by 7:00 PM Election Day (or postmarked by Election Day and received by 5:00 PM the next day).
ID requirements
Photo ID required (Texas DL/ID, US passport, military ID, tribal ID, concealed handgun license, or election ID certificate). Provisional with affidavit if no ID.
Election Day hours
Polls open 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM local time. If you are in line at 7:00 PM, you can vote.

Extra info:

  • Texas has no online voter registration — submit a paper form (DPS DL renewals do allow registration updates).
  • Mail-in voting requires a qualifying excuse: 65+, disability, out of county on Election Day, or jail (eligible).
  • Most counties use countywide vote centers — vote at any location in your county.
